Alternate route designations - Wisconsin Dells
In the event of a major incident along the I-39/90/94 Wisconsin Dells corridor, alternate routes have been identified to provide travelers a safe and timely alternative to avoid traffic delays, while still allowing emergency vehicle access to the site.
Depending on the location and direction of the closure, portable changeable message signs will be strategically placed to advise drivers of which route to use. Emergency personnel and signs will continue to direct travelers along the alternate route and back onto the interstate beyond the incident.
State and local agencies worked in cooperation to identify the most effective alternate routes and establish incident management procedures that notify appropriate emergency agencies and temporarily detour traffic.
These alternate routes involve the major transportation corridors around the Wisconsin Dells area, including I-90/94 north from Dane to Monroe counties, and I-39 from I-90/94 north to WIS 23 in Marquette County.
Once an incident has been identified, the appropriate state and local agencies will be notified and the WisDOT incident management coordinator will place the message signs at the predetermined locations to detour travelers. Local media outlets will be notified of the freeway closure and the alternate route to be used.
